We drove to LA this weekend, taking the insanely scenic Highway 1 down the coast. Around every hairy turn was aqua and navy ocean and bright white sea foam. Poor Ruvane couldn't really see out the window, but we went slowly, taking him out for sightseeing and nursing breaks. We even changed his diaper on the hood of the car, how roadtrip is that! We love LA for some reason that we can't put our fingers on. We love staying at Schecky's gorgeous apartment (see early morning heart to heart below) and drinking smoothies at Urth Cafe. When we're there, we are on vacation schedule, so we can avoid the nightmare of traffic for the most part, and still visit our friends, our favorite neighborhoods and restaurants, and still make it home for baby bedtime. This time we made it to Food (our family friends' great new restaurant), the Getty (the tram was so fun!), Venice beach and Huntington Beach (for a power surf, meaning: guys in the water, woman and child on the beach). I even saw McNulty from the Wire - a very satisfying celebrity spotting. We hustled back to Berkeley on Wednesday morning, up California's farmland spine, missing the sun almost immediately upon return. And simultaneously being so glad to have a break from the sun and car.
